Way Too Cool 50K: Cullison dominates the F40-49 field in Cool

• Kalani Cullison, 47, wins in 5:02:45 — a 9:45/mi average that put 31 minutes between her and 2nd place, the largest gap on the F40-49 podium.
• Shannon Martin climbs to the podium: the 49-year-old from Reno entered the women's field 27th, steadily worked up to 21st by the finish, and secured 3rd in F40-49 with a 5:42:56.
• Kristi Schaad and Nami Kato both charged late: Schaad posted the 13th-fastest women's split on the HWY 49→Finish leg; Kato ran the 21st-fastest women's split on Goat Hill→HWY 49 — both climbing from outside the top 30 in the women's field to land 4th and 5th in F40-49.
• Tight mid-pack battle: Melissa Johnson (6:34:25) and Taylor Utulo (6:34:37) finished 13th and 14th in F40-49 separated by just 12 seconds after more than six and a half hours of racing.

Kalani Cullison, 47, from Davis, ran a wire-to-wire masterclass. She sat 10th among all women at the first checkpoint, moved to 9th — and stayed locked there through every subsequent split, never wavering, never fading. Her 9:45/mi average across 31 miles of Sierra Nevada foothills was the class of the F40-49 group, and her 8th-fastest women's split on the Fire Station→Quarry segment shows she had genuine pop in the middle of the course. The 31-minute gap she built over Melissa Curley (5:34:08, 2nd) was decisive from early on.

Curley, 45, from Truckee, held 11th among women through the first two checkpoints before fading slightly to 15th by the finish — still a comfortable runner-up in F40-49. Behind her, Shannon Martin, 49, from Reno, told the race's best comeback story: 27th among women at the gun, she reeled in competitors segment by segment, picking up her 17th-fastest women's split on the ALT→Goat Hill stretch and ultimately crossing in 5:42:56 to claim 3rd.

The back half of the top five belonged to the late chargers. Kristi Schaad, 42, traveled from Westminster, CO, and spent most of the race outside the top 30 among women before a strong HWY 49→Finish leg (13th-fastest among women on that segment) lifted her to 4th in 5:52:01. Nami Kato, 43, from Rancho Cordova, started even further back — 39th among women — and ground her way forward all day, cracking the top 30 in the women's field and finishing 5th in F40-49 at 5:57:46. Alana Klingman (6:01:17, 6th) and Cynthia Almlie (6:02:43, 7th) rounded out a deep top ten, with all 38 finishers completing one of Northern California's most celebrated trail 50Ks on a clear, mild March morning.
