Eleven women toed the line in the F50-59 age group on a crisp, clear morning in Cool — and the top of the field delivered a race that wasn't settled until the very end. Verity Breen, 59, of Lagunitas, crossed in 5:38:34 to claim the win, but Kassandra Dimaggio, 56, of Greenwood, pushed her every step of the way, finishing just 15 seconds back in 5:38:49. Both averaged 10:54 per mile for the full 50K — but the gap between them tells the real story of two athletes running their own races and arriving at nearly the same moment by very different routes.

Breen's path to the win was anything but smooth on paper. Her gender standing drifted as far back as 28th in the early miles before she steadily climbed to 17th by the Goat Hill→HWY 49 segment, then settled at 18th at the line. It was her 10th-fastest women's split on the final HWY 49→Finish stretch that mattered most — a strong close that held off Dimaggio's charge. Dimaggio, meanwhile, ran a more consistent race through the women's field, sitting 19th among women at the finish, and her 14th-fastest women's split on Goat Hill→HWY 49 showed she had real speed in the middle stages. She ran Breen down to within 15 seconds — but 15 seconds is 15 seconds.

Rebecca Teeters, 58, of Folsom, completed the podium in 5:51:58, logging the 17th-fastest women's split on the Fire Station→Quarry segment. Trina Pham, 50, of Mather, was the youngest in the age group and finished a solid 4th in 5:57:47, while Christine Vincent rounded out the top five in 6:09:04. At the back of the field, Cynthia Groom of Orangevale finished 11th in 8:05:39 — completing a full 50K at any pace is its own achievement on this course.
