Behind him, the race for second place turned into one of the tightest finishes of the day. Chris O'Connor (59, Walnut Creek), Michael Wilgus (55, Penryn), and Scott Mann (50, Rocklin) all crossed in 5:40 — O'Connor in 5:40:01, Wilgus in 5:40:01 (0.79 seconds back), and Mann in 5:40:03. O'Connor had been climbing steadily through the men's field all day, moving from 71st to 41st among men. Wilgus made a similar charge, advancing from 77th to 42nd. On the final HWY 49→Finish leg, Wilgus ran the 29th-fastest split among women in the field to O'Connor's 23rd — O'Connor was quicker there — yet the gap at the line was under a second. Mann, who had the 43rd-fastest ALT→Goat Hill split among women, arrived just two seconds behind them both.

James Hutson (55, Lafayette) and Whit Rambach (59, Incline Village) rounded out the top six in near-lockstep: 5:51:55 and 5:51:56, a single second apart. Hutson had posted the 28th-fastest Goat Hill→HWY 49 split among women in the field to get there.
