B.A.A. 10K Women's 50–54: Bowley dominates in the Boston heat

• The battle for third was decided by 32 seconds: Veronica Vanderhorst (47:22) edged Christine Brooks (47:54), who in turn held off Kerry Swords (48:02) by just 52 seconds for fourth.

With 85°F heat and humidity pressing down on Boston, the F50-54 age group sent 237 women to the start line — and Karolyn Bowley of Middletown, RI made it look like a different race entirely. Her 38:29 at a 6:12-per-mile clip placed her 36th among all women in the field, a position she locked in early and never relinquished through every checkpoint. That kind of wire-to-wire composure on a sweltering June morning is worth noting: she was never chasing, only pulling away.

Amanda Zarle of Wellesley did the work where it mattered most, posting one of the sharper middle-race splits in the age group on the 5K-to-8K segment and finishing in 43:32 — a comfortable hold on second place. The real drama unfolded further back, where Veronica Vanderhorst of Boston was on the move. She entered the 5K checkpoint 181st among women and climbed steadily, finishing 160th — good enough for third in the age group at 47:22.

Christine Brooks of Groton made an even bigger charge through the field, moving from 238th among women at the first checkpoint all the way to 188th by the finish, but Vanderhorst's earlier momentum proved just enough to keep her at arm's length. Kerry Swords, also of Boston, rounded out the top five in 48:02 — only 8 seconds behind Brooks — with the 178th-fastest women's split on the closing 8K-to-finish segment showing she had plenty left at the end. In a race this deep, every second of that late push counted.
