Robert Engstrom of Farmington, CT, and Maurice Bourque of Lakeville, MA — both 81 years old — ran each other into the ground across all 6.2 miles, with Engstrom ultimately claiming the M80-99 title by a margin of just seven seconds.

The race between Engstrom and Bourque was genuinely close throughout. Engstrom held a narrow edge in the middle segment of the race, while Bourque found his best running late — posting the stronger split from 8K to the finish. It wasn't enough to overturn Engstrom's slim lead, but it kept the gap from widening. Seven seconds over 10 kilometers, in 85-degree heat and thick humidity, is about as tight as it gets.

Richard Neal of Woburn, MA, was the youngest of the three at 80 and ran a composed race of his own, finishing in 1:26:12 at a 13:52/mi pace. He was the stronger runner through the 5K-to-8K stretch, but Engstrom and Bourque had already built enough of a cushion to hold him off comfortably. Neal's margin back was 3:22 — a respectable gap given the conditions, and no small feat for an 80-year-old on a hot Sunday morning.

That all three men finished — and finished under 1:27 — on a day that challenged runners of every age is the real headline.
