His 39:38 left more than a minute of daylight between himself and 2nd place, which in a race this competitive and this hot is a decisive margin.

Behind Weir, Marvin Wang — a local from Jamaica Plain — ran a solid 40:46 to claim 2nd, though his splits tell a different story than Weir's steady climb. Wang actually moved backward through the men's field as the race wore on, fading from 176th at the first check to 215th by the finish. He held on for 2nd in the age group, but Christopher Swain of Marblehead was pressing, finishing 3rd in 41:09 after running consistently through the second half.

The battle for 4th was the tightest drama of the day. Eric Trolan (Sharon, MA) and Paul Davies (West Roxbury, MA) were separated by a single second — 41:38 to 41:39 — after 10 kilometers in the heat. Davies actually ran the stronger 5K-to-8K segment, posting the 223rd-fastest split in the women's field on that stretch compared to Trolan's 256th, and he moved up from 303rd among men to 255th over the course of the race. But Trolan had just enough of a cushion built earlier to hold him off at the line.
