The gap was never really in question: her gender place among all women drifted from 165th at 5K to 188th by the finish, meaning the field slowly caught up to her in relative terms, but no one in her own cohort came close.

The real drama played out behind her, where three runners fought for the remaining podium spots. Laurie Hoyt of Schenectady came through the first half in solid position — moving up from 334th to 322nd among all women through 10K — and then turned on the jets over the closing stretch, posting the 303rd-fastest women's closing split to finish 2nd in 1:14:44.
