M45-49: Drowne Dominates, Yang's Second-Half Surge Steals the Show

• Jeremy Drowne (1st, 52:59 — 5:41/mi) won the M45-49 field by 2:26 over runner-up Chip Ohara, posting one of the strongest paces of the morning at 5:41/mi across the full 15K.

• 372 finishers completed the M45-49 race, with the top 20 all breaking 1:04 on a humid Utica morning (82% humidity, despite a cool 64°F).

Jeremy Drowne, 48, from West Chazy, NY, was never seriously threatened. He moved steadily through the men's field over the first 10K and then turned up the heat on the back half, posting the 62nd-fastest 10K-to-finish split among all men — a strong finishing kick that cemented a wire-to-wire win in 52:59. His 2:26 cushion over Chip Ohara at the line made the M45-49 race his from start to finish.

Ohara (45, Auburn) held second at 55:25 and 5:57/mi, running a composed and consistent race. But the most entertaining story in the top three belonged to Shizhong Yang of Syracuse. Yang was buried around 186th among men through the first 5K, then progressively clawed his way forward — 153rd at 10K, 143rd at the finish — with a notably faster 5K→10K split to secure third in 56:18. That kind of sustained, progressive surge through a large field is hard to manufacture.

Behind the podium, the race turned into a genuine battle of attrition. Jordan Varano (4th, 57:00) and Vincent Derocco (5th, 57:06) were separated by just six seconds, with Randy Misencik (6th, 57:19) only 13 seconds further back. Kyle Mahoney (7th, 57:41) and Kees Keizer (8th, 58:04) kept the pressure on through to the line, followed by Nicholas Price (9th, 58:46) and Ryan Barry (10th, 58:48) — those two separated by just two seconds after 9.3 miles of racing.
