• Dustin Needham, 42, reverses his 2024 result — he crossed in 7th here two years ago in 1:03:38; this time he finishes 4th in 1:06:52, a different kind of day on the same mountain.

Perfect conditions — 59°F, clear skies, virtually no wind — greeted 46 finishers in the M40-49 field at Palisades Tahoe, though the course's elevation (ranging up to 7,543 ft) kept the air thin and the effort honest throughout. Gavrilov, racing out of Glenwood Springs, CO, is no stranger to altitude, and it showed: his 55:22 and 8:06/mi average left the rest of the field well behind, with nearly three minutes to the runner-up.

Neilson's race was the most dynamic story in the field. The 49-year-old from Beaverton, OR sat 12th among men through the early going, then unleashed the 6th-fastest men's split on the Olympic Valley East→Snow King segment to jump four places. He held 8th the rest of the way and crossed in 58:19 — a genuine mid-race surge that earned him the silver at an age when many competitors are simply trying to hold their position.

Hewitt (3rd, 1:01:45) and Needham (4th, 1:06:52) rounded out the top four, with a 5:07 gap separating them — meaningful real estate on an 11K mountain course. Needham's return to this race is worth a note: in 2024 he finished 7th overall among men here in 1:03:38; this edition he lands 4th in his group but slower on the clock, a reminder of how much variability a high-elevation skyrace can introduce. Damian Handisides, 49, rounded out the top five in 1:10:43 (10:21/mi), while John Breznicky (6th, 1:13:52) led the back half of the top twenty for Boulder.
