M30-34 at CIM 2018: Fletcher Wins a Sub-2:17 Showdown

• Ben Fletcher (Albuquerque, NM) wins M30-34 in 2:16:43 (5:13/mi), the only finisher in the age group under 2:17.
• The podium is separated by just 71 seconds — Fletcher, Patrick Reaves (2:17:39), and Jared Carson (2:17:49) all finished within a minute and six seconds of each other.
• Kurt Roeser posted the 19th-fastest 40K-to-finish split among men in the entire field, closing in 2:17:54 to land 4th — the strongest late surge of any M30-34 finisher.
• 551 men finished in M30-34, making it one of the deepest age groups on the course; the top 20 all broke 2:28.

Ben Fletcher ran a measured, disciplined race from Sacramento to the finish. His gender place among men tracked between the mid-30s and upper-20s for most of the race, and by the final stretch he had climbed to 24th among all men — a strong position for a 32-year-old from Albuquerque running 5:13/mi on a cool December morning. He crossed in 2:16:43, a full 56 seconds clear of the field behind him.

That field, though, was relentless. Patrick Reaves (Portland, OR) ran one of the most aggressive back-halves in the group — his gender place among men improved from 68th at the first checkpoint all the way to 31st by the finish, a climb of 37 places. He crossed in 2:17:39 to claim 2nd in M30-34. Jared Carson, also out of Portland, mirrored that trajectory almost identically — moving from 69th to 34th among men — and finished just 10 seconds behind Reaves in 2:17:49 for 3rd.

Kurt Roeser (Boulder, CO) made his move even later. He was as far back as 76th among men at one mid-race checkpoint, but his 19th-fastest 40K-to-finish split in the men's field tells the real story — he was flying at the end, and 2:17:54 for 4th was a performance that would have won many age groups outright. Cheyne Inman (Hermosa Beach, CA) rounded out the top five in 2:18:28, while Sean Swift (Hoboken, NJ) took 6th in 2:19:07 — both well inside 2:20 in a brutally competitive group.
