Jeff Young of Anchorage made his intentions clear from the gun. His gender place among all men tracked a steady, relentless climb — moving from 413th at the opening checkpoint all the way up to 295th by 40K, and he wasn't done. Over that final 40K-to-finish stretch, he posted a split that ranked 130th among all women in the race — a remarkable closing kick that underscored just how controlled and progressive his effort was. At 6:10/mi for 26.2 miles on a cool, calm Sacramento morning, Young turned in a dominant wire-to-wire performance.

Jacob Nur, a 63-year-old from nearby Elk Grove, held second place throughout and backed it up with a strong 35K–40K segment — the 239th-fastest women's split on that stretch — finishing in 2:47:42 at 6:24/mi. Michael Young of West Bloomfield rounded out the podium in 2:51:14 (6:32/mi), posting the 413th-fastest women's split on the 30K–35K segment. The top three were well clear of the rest, with Michael Brosilow of Chicago the only other man in the group to crack three hours, crossing in 2:59:01 at 6:50/mi with a strong late charge — he gained 41 places among men over the back half of the race.

Terry Baucom of El Dorado Hills rounded out the top five in 3:06:10, though his race told a different story: his gender place slipped from 762nd all the way back to 825th by the finish, suggesting a tough second half. From there, John Potts (3:11:53), Steven Mudgett (3:14:19), Steven Chavez (3:16:27), Nathan Tiggs (3:17:51), and Changming Shih (3:18:30) packed tightly into the next five spots, separated by just under seven minutes across the group.
