Bentley, meanwhile, was biding time.

It was the final push — 10.8 miles to the finish — where Bentley made it count. He posted the 4th-fastest women's split on that closing stretch, moving from 8th to 6th among the women's field and crossing in 2:04:10. Alcala finished in 2:04:38, a margin of just 28 seconds after more than two hours of racing. That gap is the difference between catching someone and not quite getting there — Alcala ran the stronger middle, Bentley ran the stronger close.

Matt Stickler of Tustin rounded out the podium in 3rd at 2:09:15 (9:52/mi), nearly five minutes adrift of the top two. Yesenia Reynoso (4th, 2:32:28) and Jori Teplitzky (5th, 2:45:13) added depth to the field, with Teplitzky posting the 12th-fastest women's split through the middle segment. Jannet Sanchez of Long Beach finished 6th in 2:52:19, followed by Amanda Hernandez (7th, 3:12:22), Jorge Leal (8th, 3:22:44), and Bela Mendoza (9th, 3:38:53) — nine finishers who covered every corner of Southern California to race in their own backyard.
