The story behind him was far more chaotic. Ethan Renager (Virginia Beach, VA) came out hot — 6th-fastest men's split on the 5K–10K segment — and sat as high as 3rd among men in the early miles. But the pace caught up with him: he slid steadily from 3rd to 19th in the men's standings before the finish line, eventually crossing 2nd in M20-24 at 2:34:18. Elijah Wilcox (Salida, CO) told the opposite story, climbing from 27th among men at the start to 20th by the finish, fueled by the 17th-fastest men's second-half split — earning 3rd in M20-24 at 2:34:24, just six seconds behind Renager.

Termorshuizen's arc was the most dramatic of all. The Corpus Christi runner — a training partner of Bowers, based on their shared hometown — surged to 2nd among men overall through the 21K–25K corridor with the fastest men's split of that segment in the entire field. But he paid for it dearly, tumbling from 2nd to 22nd among men by the gun, finishing 4th in M20-24 at 2:34:36.
