The headline result was as tight as it gets. Jeannette Smith of Alexandria, VA crossed in 2:59:38 and Jilane Petrie of Washington, DC in 2:59:42 — four seconds separating them after more than two and a half hours of racing. Both averaged 6:51/mi for the day, but the story of how each got there was different. Petrie ran aggressively early, moving from 29th to 21st among women through 10K and holding that position through the halfway mark. Smith was the one who made the decisive late move: she posted the 8th-fastest women's split on the 40K-to-finish stretch, climbing from 24th to 24th overall among women while Petrie faded from 23rd to 25th in that same closing segment. Smith timed her finish perfectly; Petrie ran a strong race but couldn't quite hold her.

Lauren Rosenthal of North Potomac, MD took 3rd in 3:02:23 (6:57/mi), and she earned it early — her 21st-fastest women's split on the 5K–10K segment put her in position, and she ran steadily enough to hold off Mia Link (3:03:04, 6:59/mi) in 4th, who also flew through that same early stretch. Fifth went to Elissa Ballas of Vacaville, CA in 3:04:02, whose race was the most dramatic climb in the top five: sitting 37th among women at the halfway point, she ran the 27th-fastest second-half split in the women's field to surge into the top 40 and then into the top five of the F40-44 field.

The battle for 6th and 7th deserves its own mention. Becca Pizzi of Belmont, MA (3:04:35) and Gina Slaby of Leavenworth, WA (3:04:36) finished one second apart — a gap that is essentially the length of a stride after 26.2 miles. Caroline Almon rounded out the top eight in 3:06:08, with Stacie Minchoff (3:07:27) and Megan Thilo (3:09:12) completing a top ten that was remarkably compressed across just over nine and a half minutes of racing.
