Rocket City Half Marathon — F15-19: Hurlbutt dominates a local field

• Erin Hurlbutt (19, Laceys Spring) won the F15-19 age group in 1:43:40 — a 7:54/mi pace that put her 10th among all women in the closing 8M→Finish stretch.
• The winning margin was commanding: Hurlbutt finished 4:42 ahead of runner-up Brooke Bogardus (1:48:22), who held 22nd among women at the finish.
• A one-second gap at 6th and 7th: Cindy Liao (2:06:37) edged Katie Hazuga (2:06:38) for 5th — one second separating two Madison, AL teammates.
• Lily Shah and Lucy Zhang finished back-to-back at 2:11:17 and 2:11:18 — one second apart for 8th and 9th — with Zhang's place confirmed by timing finer than the displayed seconds.

Erin Hurlbutt came to Huntsville and made the F15-19 age group her own. Running at 7:54 per mile across 13.1 miles on a mild, overcast December morning, she was never seriously threatened. Her strongest statement came in the back half: the 10th-fastest women's split on the 8M-to-Finish segment in the entire women's field is a number that speaks for itself, and it's what separated a good performance from a genuinely impressive one.

Brooke Bogardus (18, Madison) was a clear and comfortable second, crossing in 1:48:22 at 8:16/mi — 4:42 behind Hurlbutt but well clear of the rest. Kristen Hart (16, Huntsville) rounded out the podium in 2:00:31, becoming the only other finisher to break the two-hour mark. Behind Hart, Taigan Wessells and Cindy Liao ran closely through much of the race before Liao faded slightly on the back half — she dropped from 90th to 100th among women over that final stretch — allowing Wessells to land 4th in 2:05:25.

The race's tightest moment came at positions 5 and 6: Liao (2:06:37) and Madison teammate Katie Hazuga (2:06:38) were separated by a single second. Further back, the 8th-and-9th battle between Lily Shah and Lucy Zhang — both clocked at 10:01/mi, finishing one second apart — was another quiet drama buried in the results. Twelve finishers in all made up the F15-19 field, with Xin Lin closing out the group in 2:50:09.
