Rocket City Back Half — F15-19: Sivley holds on as Tanner makes her move

• Kinsey Sivley won the F15-19 age group in 1:55:25 (8:48/mi), the fastest of the three finishers.
• Marycase Tanner closed the gap to just 1:34 at the finish, surging from 50th to 26th among women in the back half — the 16th-fastest women's split on the 10K→Finish stretch.
• Sara Barksdale rounded out the podium in 2:05:30, moving from 76th to 58th among women over the same closing stretch.

Three teenagers lined up for the F15-19 half marathon on a muggy December morning in Huntsville — 56°F but a suffocating 98% humidity — and they produced a race with a genuine twist in its tail.

Kinsey Sivley, 18, of Huntsville set the early pace and built enough of a cushion to matter. Through the first half of the race she sat 11th among women, running at an 8:48/mi clip that would prove just sufficient. But "just sufficient" is the operative phrase — because behind her, 17-year-old Marycase Tanner from Birmingham was quietly assembling one of the stronger closing kicks in the women's field. Tanner had been buried 50th among women at the 10K mark, but she unleashed the 16th-fastest women's split on the 10K→Finish stretch, rocketing all the way to 26th among women by the line. That charge brought her to within 1:34 of Sivley — close, but Sivley's earlier work held up, and she crossed first in 1:55:25.

Sivley's own back half was no slouch either — her 42nd-fastest women's split on that closing stretch shows she didn't coast. She simply didn't have Tanner's finishing gear on the day, and it nearly cost her. Sara Barksdale, 19, of Cedar Bluff completed the age group in 2:05:30 (9:34/mi), also moving forward in the women's field over the final stretch — climbing from 76th to 58th — for a composed finish to round out the podium.
