Rocket City Back Half — F65-69: Mary Marshall runs away with it

• Mary Marshall wins in 1:50:59 — an 8:28/mi average that put more than 30 minutes between her and the rest of the F65-69 field.
• Marshall posted the 17th-fastest women's split on the 10K-to-Finish stretch, climbing from 10th to 13th among all women even as the field thinned — a strong close in a damp, heavy-air morning.
• Debra Stokes and Kim McCandless separated by 3:08 for 2nd and 3rd, both picking up places in the women's field over the back half.
• Places 14–16 finished within 28 seconds of each other — Sue Prueitt, Casey Campbell, and Donna Dooley in a tight cluster near the 3:21 mark.

Mary Marshall made the F65-69 race her own from the start. Her 1:50:59 — 8:28 per mile through a humid, overcast Huntsville morning — was in a different class entirely. While the rest of the field was working through the 10-plus-minute-per-mile range, Marshall was already closing out her race with one of the sharper finishing splits in the women's field, posting the 17th-fastest 10K-to-Finish leg among all women on the day.

Behind her, Debra Stokes of Melbourne, FL earned a clear second in 2:21:47 (10:49/mi), with Kim McCandless of Madison, AL — racing on home turf — taking third in 2:24:55. Both women made up ground over the back half, each moving up more than a dozen spots in the overall women's standings on that closing stretch. Lee Hartmann of Tupelo, MS came in fourth at 2:27:53, with Mickie Wilsman and Kathy Elliott rounding out the top six within a couple of minutes of each other.

The back of the pack offered its own drama. Donna Dooley, Sue Prueitt, and Casey Campbell — hailing from New Jersey, Seattle, and Seattle respectively — finished 14th through 16th in the age group separated by just 28 seconds across a span of 3:21:27 to 3:21:55. Twenty finishers completed the F65-69 field on a morning that asked plenty of everyone, with Jacqueline Harris of Detroit closing it out in 3:54:17.
