Rocket City Half Marathon — F50-54: Norton edges Hickman in a sprint finish

• Laura Norton (Pell City, AL) won the F50-54 age group in 1:53:02 at an 8:37/mi pace, finishing 15th among all women.
• The margin at the top was just 38 seconds — Norton over Libby Hickman (1:53:40) — the tightest gap between any two finishers in the age group.
• Norton gained two spots in the women's field over the final stretch (10K→Finish), posting the 11th-fastest closing split among all women — while Hickman dropped one spot in that same window.
• Kim Benner made the biggest charge of the day in the back half, climbing from 36th to 30th among women on the 10K→Finish leg.

Laura Norton and Libby Hickman ran together in spirit for most of the morning, but the final miles told the real story. Norton, 53, from Pell City, was the stronger closer — her 10K-to-finish split ranked 11th among all women in the field, and she used it to move from 17th to 15th in the women's standings while pulling decisively clear of Hickman. Hickman, 52, out of Henagar, actually slipped a spot in the women's field over that same stretch, finishing in 1:53:40. Both women broke 1:54 in warm, humid December conditions — 60°F and 85% humidity isn't the weather you'd draw up for a fast half marathon.

Ali Levering (50, Cumming, GA) and Kim Benner (53, Birmingham, AL) battled it out for third and fourth, separated by just 28 seconds at the line. Benner was the more aggressive finisher of the two, climbing from 36th to 30th among women on the back half with the 30th-fastest closing split in the women's field. Levering wasn't far behind — 29th-fastest closing split — and her earlier positioning held her in third. Both finished just under two hours, a strong showing given the conditions.

Lesley Garner (50, Danville, AL) rounds out the top five in 2:03:16, though the second half was a grind — she fell from 20th to 37th among women over the 10K-to-finish stretch. Behind her, Stephanie Gillis through Jonni Smotherman completed all 14 finishers in the F50-54 age group, a solid turnout for a competitive bracket on a warm, overcast Alabama December morning.
