Rocket City Front Half: Benko Takes M50-54 in Sub-1:57

• Andrew Benko (age 54, Dubuque, IA) won the M50-54 group in 1:56:58 — a 8:55/mi average — the only finisher in the field to break two hours.
• Greg Garner ran 1:58:50 to claim second, just 1:52 back, with Jamie Trimble another 1:46 behind in third at 2:00:36.
• The top three were separated by 3:38; the gap from 3rd to 4th (Dane Block Sr., 2:04:03) was another 3:27 — a clear break between the podium and the rest.
• Sixteen men finished M50-54 on a warm, humid December morning — 60°F and 85% humidity made sub-two-hour running genuinely earned.

Andrew Benko made the trip from Dubuque, Iowa worthwhile. Running at 8:55 per mile, the 54-year-old was the class of the M50-54 field from wire to wire, and his finishing kick was real — he moved from 35th to 29th among the men on the 10K-to-finish segment, one of the stronger closing splits in the broader field. In a race where the humidity had plenty to say, breaking 1:57 was no small thing.

Greg Garner, racing on home-state soil in Danville, AL, kept it close through the first half but couldn't quite hold the pace over the closing miles — he slipped from 30th to 33rd among the men on that same 10K-to-finish stretch. Still, 1:58:50 earned him a clear second. Jamie Trimble of Birmingham crossed in 2:00:36 for third, also finishing strongly enough to move up from 41st to 38th among the men in the back half — a solid close to lock up the podium.

Dane Block Sr., racing in his hometown of Huntsville, finished fourth in 2:04:03 but faded over the final stretch, dropping from 34th to 43rd among the men after the 10K mark. Jean-Philippe Guindon (Hixson, TN) rounded out the top five at 2:05:41. Behind them, the field spread out considerably — from Jason Rios at 2:18:05 all the way to Charles Oehrlein's 3:01:54 to close out the 16-man group. Every one of them got it done on a muggy Sunday in Huntsville.
