Tracking his position among the men, he sat around 20th–22nd through the opening miles before beginning a steady climb — and then a dramatic one. By the finish, he had surged all the way to 6th among all men, running a 6:12/mi pace to clock 2:42:30 and claim M30-34 outright. His fastest segment came between 5.7 and 6.43 miles, where he posted the 15th-fastest split in the field on that stretch — a sign he was already pressing early.

The early race belonged to Zhaolong Zhong, who ran as high as 1st among men before gradually slipping back through the field. The San Francisco local still finished a strong 2nd in M30-34 at 2:46:42, but his trajectory was one of steady retreat. James Goswell, racing from New York, held a more consistent line — hovering around 5th–7th among men for much of the race — and crossed 3rd in 2:47:25. Both Zhong and Goswell posted top-10 men's splits on the 2.2-to-5.7-mile segment, with Goswell's the 4th-fastest in the field on that stretch and Zhong's the 7th.

Behind the podium, Chris Concannon (4th, 2:53:07) and Eric Norris (5th, 2:53:58) were separated by just 51 seconds, with Norris making his move late — his 24th-fastest men's split on the final 18-to-24-mile stretch was the most notable closing effort in the group. Michael Graham (6th, 2:54:53), Robby Long (7th, 2:55:53), and Dmitrii Kuragin (8th, 2:55:57) were virtually inseparable, finishing within a minute of each other across places 6 through 9. In a field of 548 M30-34 finishers running through San Francisco's fog and hills, Martin's controlled aggression proved the decisive formula.
