Joanna Drewnicka-Ogrodniik's win was anything but straightforward. She came through the early miles ranked as high as 13th among women, then gradually slipped back — sitting 44th at mile 24. What followed was a stunning closing surge: she posted the 12th-fastest women's split from 24 Miles to the Finish and rocketed back through the field to cross in 3:25:44, more than eight and a half minutes clear of second place. In a cool, overcast San Francisco morning with barely a breath of wind, conditions were about as cooperative as the city ever offers — and she made full use of them.

Ran Liu (Tustin, CA) held a remarkably steady race. After settling into the mid-50s among women through the middle miles, she found another gear between 6.43 and 10.92 miles — posting the 39th-fastest women's split on that stretch — and maintained enough consistency to finish 2nd in 3:34:15 at age 56. Third went to Olga Alises (Madrid, 3:38:44), who actually ran the 17th-fastest women's split on the opening 2.2-to-5.7-mile stretch and was as high as 9th early on, before gradually fading from that early pace to settle in 3rd.

The mid-pack told its own story of charge and attrition. Grace He (Fremont, CA) began the race 139th among women and climbed all the way to 4th by the finish in 3:43:01 — a sustained push across the entire course. Chandra Babcock went even further, starting 238th and finishing 5th in 3:43:59, with the 37th-fastest women's split from 18 Miles to 24 Miles powering her charge. Behind them, Sokurov (3:44:34) and Peck (3:45:04) rounded out the top seven within a minute of each other, making for a tightly contested middle of the podium.
