SF Marathon 5K — F50-54: Swanson runs away with it

• Katherine Swanson won in 25:11 (8:06/mi), finishing 1:42 ahead of 2nd place — the largest gap between any two consecutive finishers on the podium.
• Virginia Villegas took 2nd in 26:53, with Julie Hung (3rd, 27:18) and Edith Lagunes (4th, 27:20) separated by just two seconds behind her.
• The top 10 spanned from 25:11 to 32:14 — a range of just over seven minutes across a competitive F50-54 field of 47.
• Sheri Madrid (7th, 31:00) crossed the line running just under the 10:00/mi mark, a natural dividing line — the next finisher, Dana Dodson (8th, 31:33), came in at 10:09/mi.

Katherine Swanson of Sunnyvale set the tone from the gun and never let up. Her 8:06/mi average was a full 33 seconds per mile faster than anyone else in the F50-54 field, and her 25:11 finish left no doubt about who owned this race on a cool, damp San Francisco morning — 53°F, 95% humidity, and a stiff bay breeze that made every mile feel a bit heavier than it looked on paper.

Behind Swanson, the real drama unfolded in the battle for 3rd and 4th. Virginia Villegas (2nd, 26:53) had a comfortable cushion over the next pair, but Julie Hung and Edith Lagunes — both running 8:47–8:48/mi — were locked in a race-within-a-race. Hung crossed in 27:18, Lagunes in 27:20. Two seconds after 3.1 miles is as close as it gets without a photo finish.

The field spread out steadily from there. Berenice Buenrostro (5th, 29:08) and Lisa Sorani (6th, 29:14) were similarly tight — six seconds apart — before the pack thinned into the 31- and 32-minute range. Yvette Bonaparte of San Francisco rounded out the listed finishers in 20th place with a 36:54, and 27 more women completed the course behind her, making for a full and lively F50-54 showing on the streets of the city.
