San Francisco 5K: Aatipamula Dominates M50-54 in the Fog

Hemanth Aatipamula, 53, from Overland Park, KS, made the M50-54 race his own from the gun. His 7:47/mi average produced a 24:10 finish that left the rest of the field chasing shadows — Dennis Hayes, 2nd in 26:21, was a full 2:11 back. That's not a close race at the front; that's a statement.

Hayes (8:29/mi) and Miguel Araujo of Hayward, CA (8:43/mi) ran meaningfully different paces, but Araujo's 27:06 still secured the podium comfortably. The real drama unfolded one step below: San Francisco locals Javier Rodriguez and Robert Metchev, both running 9:05/mi, crossed in 28:13 and 28:14 — a single second deciding 4th from 5th after 3.1 miles in the fog.

Dickson Sum (6th, 29:12) and Leopoldo Vilchis (7th, 30:21) rounded out the top seven before the field spread further back through the teens and beyond. Eduardo Rodriguez, 8th in 30:50, and Darshan Singh, 9th in 31:53, kept the pack honest, while Bhanu Anukonda (10th, 32:57) and Cee Bee (11th, 33:47) followed close behind. The back half of the top 20 — from Dinesh Shenoy's 34:22 in 12th through Michael Ford's 40:59 in 20th — spans a wide range of paces, a reminder that in a 5K on a cool San Francisco morning, just finishing the distance is its own version of the story.
