He entered the race running in the 118th spot among men and didn't crack the top 75 until the back half, steadily threading through the field on the 6.62M–10.65M stretch — where he posted the 63rd-fastest split among the women's field, a useful benchmark for just how hard he was pushing through that segment. He arrived at the line with 40 seconds to spare over his closest challenger.

Henry Wong, the San Francisco local, took the opposite trajectory. He burst out of the gates, sitting as high as 26th among men after the opening miles, but the middle of the course eroded that cushion steadily, and he came home 2nd in 1:35:44 at 7:18/mi. It was a genuine catch-up story: Herrera Sainz ran that critical mid-race segment faster, and the gap it opened proved decisive. Wong's early pace was simply not sustainable at the same level, though 1:35:44 at age 54 is a performance worth respecting on its own terms.

Mufaro Chivasa, making the trip from Calgary, ran one of the most consistent arcs in the M50-54 field — moving from 217th to 128th among men across the course and finishing 3rd in 1:38:52 (7:33/mi). Behind him, the race tightened dramatically: Venkatesh Sivapur (4th, 1:43:08) and Yuan Gu (5th, 1:43:08) were inseparable on the clock, with timing precision deciding the places. Qiu Fang was just two seconds further back in 7th at 1:43:10, making it three finishers within two seconds across three spots. Randall Mann rounded out the top eight in 1:45:34, with Dan Richards 10th in 1:48:33 to close out a competitive top ten.
