Mintz was breathing down his neck the entire way. Both men averaged 8:16/mi on paper, yet Mintz had ground to make up after a slower middle stretch: his gender-place tracking showed him sitting 399th at one checkpoint before rallying back to 388th by the finish, while Chen — who had climbed as high as 356th among men before settling at 380th — held his position more steadily through the second half. Behind the top two, the next three finishers staged their own miniature war.
