Most impressively, he posted the fastest women's split on the 1.40M→2.13M stretch, a burst of speed that underscored just how thoroughly he controlled this race.

Behind him, the real drama unfolded in a battle for 2nd and 3rd between Samantha Kann of Santa Clara and Vivian Chui of Millbrae. Chui actually moved through the early miles with slightly more momentum — she sat 5th among women to Kann's 6th at the first checkpoint — but Kann was the one making ground. By the 2.13M mark, Kann had pulled ahead of Chui and stayed there through every subsequent checkpoint. Chui, meanwhile, posted the 8th-fastest women's split on the 10.65M-to-finish stretch, a strong closing effort — but it wasn't quite enough to overturn the gap Kann had built.

The two crossed the line separated by just one second: Kann in 2:59:49, Chui in 2:59:50, both averaging 13:43/mi. The finish time was nearly identical; the race story was not. Kann earned 2nd by making her move in the middle miles and holding on. Chui pushed hard to the end but ran out of course.
