Santa Rosa 10K: Scot McLean Laps the M50-59 Field

• Scot McLean, 58, wins in 36:55 — a 5:56/mi average that left the rest of the M50-59 field more than ten minutes behind.
• Jorge Ahuactzin (47:00) edges Javier Fernandez (47:24) for second, with just 24 seconds separating them across 6.2 miles.
• Gregory Morre and Jake Lambert finish 4th and 5th in 50:04 and 50:05 — one second apart after more than fifty minutes of racing.
• 40 men aged 50–59 toed the line in light rain on a cool Santa Rosa morning, with 20 finishers named and the full field running deep.

Scot McLean of San Anselmo made this one a solo time trial. His 36:55 finish — 5:56 per mile, in the rain, at 58 years old — was a full 10:05 clear of second place. That's not a race gap; that's a different gear entirely. While the rest of the M50-59 field was still working through their seventh and eighth minutes per mile, McLean was already cooling down.

Behind him, Jorge Ahuactzin (San Francisco, age 56) and Javier Fernandez (Santa Rosa, age 50) ran a genuine race for the podium. Ahuactzin crossed in 47:00 at 7:34/mi to claim second; Fernandez, running 7:38/mi, arrived 24 seconds later to take third. The gap was real but the competition was close — two men from opposite ends of the age range meeting at nearly the same finish line.

The battle for fourth and fifth was the tightest of the day. Gregory Morre (54, Santa Rosa) finished in 50:04; Jake Lambert (57, also Santa Rosa) crossed in 50:05. One second — after eight-plus minutes per mile for fifty minutes — separated two local runners who likely saw each other the entire way. Rutger Vrijen (53:39) and Mike Persinger (53:57) then ran their own close contest for sixth and seventh, just 18 seconds apart.

Further back, a dense pack from 9th through 17th place — all finishing between 56:57 and 1:00:59 — showed how competitive the middle of the M50-59 field was on a wet August morning in Santa Rosa. Twenty more finishers rounded out a 40-man field that ran hard from front to back.
