Masters Women 10K: La Sala Laps the Field in Santa Rosa

• Michelle La Sala (1st, 41:03, 6:36/mi) won the Masters Women race by an extraordinary 8 minutes and 1 second over 2nd-place Carrie Hunt.
• Carrie Hunt (2nd, 49:04) and Gayle Pellizzer (3rd, 49:31) ran the tightest battle on the podium, separated by just 27 seconds across 6.2 miles.
• Places 4–7 compressed into 26 seconds: Rocio Gonzalez (4th, 52:08), Kelly Knutson (5th, 52:11), Andrea Guzman (6th, 52:29), and Angela Sutherland (7th, 52:34) formed a genuine four-way scrum at the back of the top ten.
• Nuvit Salz (10th, 54:44) was the standout age story — at 64, she outran women up to two decades younger to crack the top ten in a 164-finisher field.

Michelle La Sala simply ran a different race than anyone else in the Masters Women field. Her 6:36/mi pace on a cool, lightly rainy Santa Rosa morning produced a 41:03 that left second place more than eight minutes back. That's not a close contest — it's a statement. The Napa runner's margin over the rest of the 164-woman field was so commanding that the real competition for the podium was happening in an entirely separate conversation.

That podium conversation belonged to Carrie Hunt and Gayle Pellizzer. Hunt, racing on home roads in Santa Rosa, crossed in 49:04 at 7:54/mi to claim second. Pellizzer from Clovis closed the gap slightly over the course, finishing in 49:31 at 7:58/mi — a noticeably quicker pace than Hunt's — but the 27 seconds Hunt had built proved just enough. Credit Hunt for holding on; credit Pellizzer for making her earn it.

Behind them, the race from 4th through 7th was genuinely gripping. Rocio Gonzalez (52:08), Kelly Knutson (52:11), Andrea Guzman (52:29), and Angela Sutherland (52:34) were separated by a grand total of 26 seconds. Sutherland, at 52 the oldest of the quartet, held off the rest of the field to secure 7th — a strong result in a competitive cluster.

One more name deserves a spotlight: Nuvit Salz, 64 years old, finished 10th in 54:44. In a masters field where most competitors were in their 40s and early 50s, Salz ran 8:49/mi through the Santa Rosa drizzle to finish ahead of more than 150 others. That's a performance worth remembering.
