M20-34: Chassagne steals UTMB in the closing miles

• Baptiste Chassagne, 18:50:50 — wins M20-34 by 46 seconds, posting the fastest men's split on the La Giète→Trient segment and holding 2nd among men from the second checkpoint onward.
• Caleb Olson, 18:51:36 — climbs from 11th to 3rd among men across the race, logs the fastest men's split on Vallorcine Sortie→La Flégère, and finishes 46 seconds back — the closest gap on the podium.
• Virgile Moriset, 19:03:35 — the biggest mover in the top five, surging from 30th to 4th among men, powered by the fastest men's split on Arnouvaz→Grand Col Ferret.
• Joaquin Lopez, 19:10:00 — ran as high as 3rd among men before finishing 4th in M20-34 at 19:10:00, his Courmayeur→Refuge Bertone split the fastest among men on that leg.

Baptiste Chassagne came to Chamonix's finish line having run one of the most controlled races in the M20-34 field. He moved to 2nd among men by the second checkpoint and simply refused to be dislodged, staying there through 170-plus kilometers of the Mont-Blanc massif's relentless climbing and descent. His La Giète→Trient split was the fastest among men on that segment — a decisive move in the race's latter stages — and he crossed in 18:50:50 at a 10:28/mi average, well inside the men's course record of 19:37:43.

Forty-six seconds. That's the entire margin between Chassagne and Caleb Olson, who ran a very different race to get there. Olson was 11th among men early on, worked his way steadily forward, and then unleashed the fastest men's split on the Vallorcine Sortie→La Flégère segment — one of the final major legs — to arrive in Chamonix at 18:51:36. He was catching up, fast, but the finish line came just soon enough for Chassagne. Virgile Moriset, 25, was the field's great charging story: 30th among men at the first checkpoint, he carved through the field with the fastest men's split on the punishing Arnouvaz→Grand Col Ferret climb and finished 3rd in M20-34 at 19:03:35.

Joaquin Lopez ran near the sharp end all day — as high as 3rd among men — and his Courmayeur→Refuge Bertone split was the fastest among men on that leg, but a fade in the final stretch left him 4th at 19:10:00. Gautier Bonnecarrere rounded out the top five in 19:26:28, posting the 4th-fastest men's split on Refuge de la Croix du Bonhomme→Les Chapieux. Behind them, Antoine Charvolin (6th, 19:43:45) and Drew Holmen (7th, 20:28:01) led a field of 277 finishers through one of trail running's most demanding circuits — 9,700 meters of gain, three countries, and a clock that stops only when Chamonix's streets come back into view.
