M40-44 at UTMB 2026: Noël Takes the Crown in Under 20 Hours

• Yannick Noël wins the M40-44 race in 19:54:54 (11:03/mi), edging Jean-Philippe Tschumi by 6:42 — both men finishing inside the 20-hour barrier on a 174 km course with over 9,700 metres of climbing.
• Raul Octaviu Butaci posted the 2nd-fastest men's split on the Arête du Mont-Favre→Checrouit - Maison Vieille segment, propelling him to 3rd in 20:29:58 — a 35:04 gap back to Tschumi but a decisive hold on the podium.
• Andreas Rieder was the field's great mover: starting 82nd among men, he climbed steadily to finish 14th among men and 4th in the M40-44 field in 20:36:36, including the 3rd-fastest men's split on Refuge Bonatti→Arnouvaz.

The M40-44 race at UTMB 2026 had a genuine battle at the front, with Noël and Tschumi trading places among the men's field across the entire course. Noël started stronger — sitting 13th among men early — but drifted back to 18th through the middle stages before rallying hard to reach 9th among men by the finish. His 4th-fastest men's split on the Checrouit - Maison Vieille→Courmayeur Sport Center Entrée segment was a highlight, but Noël's 6:42 cushion at the tape proved unassailable.

Butaci and Rieder made the podium through relentless forward momentum. Butaci moved from 36th to 13th among men across the race, with his blistering 2nd-fastest men's split on the Mont-Favre ridge doing the heavy lifting. Rieder's journey was even more dramatic — 82nd among men at the first checkpoint, he carved through the field segment by segment, his 3rd-fastest men's split on the Bonatti→Arnouvaz stretch a clear marker of where he found his legs on the Italian side of the massif.

Behind the top four, the M40-44 field spread across a wide range of finishing times, with 327 finishers completing one of trail running's most demanding courses — 174 km circling the Mont-Blanc massif through France, Italy, and Switzerland, in cool but heavily humid conditions. Lecauchois in 5th (22:13:02) was the last man under 22:15, while places 6 through 20 were clustered between 23:38 and 26:01, a testament to how the race's closing kilometres, at elevations pushing toward 8,000 feet, can compress and punish in equal measure.
