At 14:20 per mile, he ran a pace more than a minute and fifteen seconds per mile faster than the man who finished second — a gap that compounded into a 2:20:00 lead by the time he crossed the line in Chamonix.

The battle for 2nd and 3rd was a genuinely different kind of drama. Tim Chiu, 51, ran a controlled race through the middle sections, posting the 118th-fastest men's split on Les Tseppes→Vallorcine Entrée, and held 2nd at 28:09:06. But Jerome Gouan, 51, had been surging hard — starting deep in the men's field around 622nd and steadily cutting through the pack. His 74th-fastest men's split on the Trient→Les Tseppes segment was the decisive move, and he arrived in Chamonix just 39 seconds behind Chiu at 28:09:45.
