Four women lined up in the X50-54 group for the Prospect Park to Central Park run on a crisp, clear 40°F morning — conditions that rewarded patience and smart pacing. The standout story belonged to Arvin De La Vega, who looked anything but a winner through the opening miles. She entered the race sitting 56th among women, then slid further back to 77th by 5K — one of the more alarming early fades in the group. But De La Vega clearly had a plan.

From 5K onward she reeled in competitor after competitor, climbing from 77th to 72nd to 68th among women, and then detonating on the back half.
