Women's Ascent: Gibson doubles up on the mountain

• Anna Gibson (27, Teton Village, WY) led wire-to-wire to win in 43:15 at 11:59/mi — and paired it with the fastest women's split from KT 22 to the finish
• Joyce Muthoni Njeru chased her to the top just 8 seconds back in 43:23, with the second-fastest women's closing split
• Nélie Clément was the podium-zone mover, climbing from 6th to 5th (46:21) on the strength of the 4th-fastest women's split up the final pitch
• Barely a blink separated 13th and 14th: Jenna Gigliotti (48:53.39) edged Leah Yingling (48:53.89) by half a second

Anna Gibson made this climb look like a formality — and it's anything but. On a course topping out near 8,845 feet, where the thin air punishes every hard breath, she held the women's lead from first checkpoint to summit and sealed it with the fastest women's split on the final KT 22-to-finish stretch, stopping the clock at 43:15. But the bigger story is the weekend she's stitched together: Gibson also won the USATF Championship Ascent and took 6th among the women in the 23K. Three races, two Ascent wins — that's the performance of the page.

Joyce Muthoni Njeru refused to let it be comfortable. The Kenyan matched Gibson nearly stride for stride at 12:01/mi, closing with the second-fastest women's final split to finish just 8 seconds down in 43:23 — this after taking 3rd among the women in the 23K. Tabor Hemming completed the podium in 44:55, third-fastest on the closing climb herself and fresh off 4th in the 23K women's race.

Behind them, Nélie Clément made the day's most visible move, surging from 6th to 5th (46:21) over the final segment. The USATF Championship Ascent podium came back for more, too: Erin Moyer, 2nd there, took 6th here in 46:58, and 42-year-old Stephanie Bruce, 3rd at the championship, ran 47:55 for 9th — just 10 seconds behind the 7th–8th duel where Jade Belzberg (47:45) held off Eden O'Dea (47:46) by a single tick.

In a women's field 187 strong, though, the tightest scrap belonged to Gigliotti and Yingling — half a second deciding 13th from 14th after nearly 49 minutes of climbing.
