Broken Arrow Ascent M40-49: Cackler Charges to the Top

• Joseph Cackler, 41, Salt Lake City — wins M40-49 in 44:33 (12:21/mi), finishing more than 3:30 clear of the field.
• Egor Gavrilov vs. Dorian Gross — just 8 seconds separated 3rd from 4th (50:26 vs. 50:34), with Gavrilov making up ground on the final KT 22→Finish segment to hold off the South Lake Tahoe local.
• Gabriel Rodriguez and Michael Postaski — separated by only 2 seconds at the line (51:52 vs. 51:54) after Rodriguez ran the closing segment faster, making it a genuine catch-up battle for 5th.
• 81 finishers completed the M40-49 race across a course climbing from roughly 6,257 to 8,845 feet — thin air all the way up.

Joseph Cackler made the M40-49 race look authoritative. The 41-year-old from Salt Lake City crossed in 44:33 — a 12:21/mi average on a course that gains serious elevation at altitude — and built on his position through the final stretch, moving from 34th to 33rd among men on the KT 22→Finish segment with the 38th-fastest split in the men's field on that leg. No one in the M40-49 field came within three and a half minutes of him.

Behind Cackler, Jason Harcum of Benicia took 2nd in 48:07 — a 13:20/mi average — also gaining places late, moving from 60th to 55th among men on the closing segment. Then came one of the tightest battles on the leaderboard: Egor Gavrilov (Glenwood Springs, CO) finished 3rd in 50:26, with Dorian Gross of South Lake Tahoe — racing on something close to home turf — just 8 seconds back in 4th at 50:34. Gavrilov ran the 59th-fastest closing split among men to Gross's 64th, meaning Gavrilov closed the gap late to secure that 8-second cushion. Notably, Gavrilov also raced the 11K at this event, where he placed 5th among men — a strong double at Palisades Tahoe.

The battle for 5th was even tighter at the wire. Gabriel Rodriguez (North Bend, WA) and Michael Postaski (Boise, ID) finished in 51:52 and 51:54 respectively — Rodriguez running the 73rd-fastest closing split among men to Postaski's unranked leg, suggesting Rodriguez was the one doing the chasing in those final miles. Matthew Bopp (Albuquerque, NM) rounded out the top seven in 52:31, with 20 named finishers ranging all the way to Matthew Tong's 1:00:43 in 20th — and 61 more M40-49 competitors behind them.
