F40-44: Madden runs down the field to claim Sacramento

Anne-Marie Madden, 42, from Pemberton, ran one of the most composed races in the F40-44 group on a mild December morning in Sacramento — 63°F and overcast, about as good as California offers in December. She sat 116th among women at the gun and never panicked. Checkpoint by checkpoint she climbed: 107th, 103rd, 95th, 87th, 71st, 63rd. Her 6:16/mi average tells the story of a runner who found a gear and stayed in it, and her 41st-fastest women's split on the 30K–35K stretch confirmed she was still accelerating late. The win was earned with arithmetic precision.

Shelley McDonald (2:45:17, 6:18/mi) ran a strong early race — her 57th-fastest women's split on the 10K–15K segment gave her a genuine cushion — and she held it together well enough for second, finishing just 67 seconds behind Madden. Melissa Perlman (2:46:23) was the late-race mover of the podium, posting the 38th-fastest women's split on the 35K–40K segment to close hard from 97th among women at 35K all the way to 3rd in F40-44.

The most dramatic arc belonged to Kristin Dailey. She was flying — 5th-fastest women's split in the entire field on the Half-to-25K stretch, moving from 77th to 26th among women. Then the wheels came off: she dropped to 136th among women by 30K and eventually finished 4th in the age group at 2:47:58. It's a cautionary tale told in split data. Jami Tautfest (2:48:08) rounded out the top five just 10 seconds behind Dailey, making the gap between 4th and 5th the tightest on the entire podium.
