John McGowan (New Haven, CT) controlled the M30-34 race with a measured, intelligent effort. He didn't bolt to the front immediately — his position among the men drifted slightly in the early miles — but from 35K onward he was a freight train, climbing from 51st to 20th among men by 40K and ultimately finishing 20th among the men. That 30K–35K surge, where he posted the 13th-fastest split in the field, was the decisive move. By the finish, his 2:17:28 at 5:15/mi stood nearly two minutes clear of everyone else in the age group.

Behind him, Cristobal Gutierrez (Columbus, OH) ran one of the more dramatic races in the group. His position among the men sat as low as 126th early on, but a relentless second half — capped by the 28th-fastest split in the field from 40K to the finish — hauled him all the way to 2nd in M30-34 in 2:19:12. Craig Hunt (Flagstaff, AZ) was right on his heels in 2:19:24, having run a steadier, more even race, and earned the 39th-fastest split in the field on the 35K–40K segment. Sergey Sushchikh rounded out the top four in 2:19:51, also a strong closer — his second-half split ranked 42nd in the field.

The depth in this age group was striking. Five men broke 2:21, and the gap from 7th (Dan Kremske, 2:22:34) through 9th (Garret Ehlers, 2:22:39) was a mere five seconds across three athletes. In a field of 931 finishers, the racing at the front was as tight and competitive as the course conditions — mild at 63°F with a gentle overcast — would allow.
