The 65-year-old from Larkspur moved through the women's field with steady authority, climbing from 762nd among women at the first checkpoint all the way to 704th by the 35K mark before a slight drift in the closing kilometers. Her 7:44/mi average — a full 34 seconds per mile faster than second place — was the defining number of the morning in this group.

Behind her, the fight for silver was genuinely gripping. Cory Benson of Sacramento and Laura Kennedy from Lake Forest, Illinois, ran essentially the same race. Benson held the edge throughout but Kennedy was the stronger finisher: she posted the 983rd-fastest women's split on the 35K–40K segment and climbed steadily through the women's field in the back half, moving from 1,262nd among women at the opening checkpoint all the way to 1,101st by the finish. That relentless forward progress fell just 9 seconds short of Benson, who crossed in 3:37:29.

Maggie Mason (3:39:47) and Lanore Bergenske (3:42:48) completed a tight top five. Bergenske's race had the most turbulence of the group — she surged into the women's top 1,131 by 35K before fading back to 1,240th at the line — but her 8:30/mi average still earned fifth. Pam Butler (3:46:43) and Helena Harman (3:55:20) held off the back half of the field, where 48 women in all finished, ranging from Fitzpatrick's dominant 3:22 all the way through the 4:40s on a warm, overcast Sacramento December morning.
