M45-49: Paradis edges Wardian in a sub-2:30 showdown

• Nicolas Paradis won the M45-49 group in 2:29:02 (5:41/mi), the only man in the field to break 2:29.
• Michael Wardian pushed him all the way, finishing just 52 seconds back in 2:29:54 — the two men separated by less than a minute across 26.2 miles.
• The top five all broke 2:37, a remarkably tight and fast cluster across a 593-man field.
• Rick McCray was the strongest finisher of the podium group, posting the 156th-fastest 40K-to-finish split in the entire field — a closing kick that lifted him from deep in the pack to 5th.

Nicolas Paradis, 48, from Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville, ran a masterclass in patient racing. He was sitting around 280th among men through the 30K mark, well off the early pace of the overall field — but that was by design. From 35K onward he surged, climbing from 284th among men to 193rd by the finish, posting the 85th-fastest 35K-to-40K split in the field along the way. His 5:41/mi average held together when it mattered most, and the 2:29:02 was good enough to claim the M45-49 title.

Michael Wardian, 49, ran the mirror image of a different kind of race. The Arlington, Virginia runner came through the half marathon in a strong position among men and kept chipping away — moving from 361st among men at the opening checkpoint all the way up to 210th by 40K. He couldn't quite reel in Paradis over those final kilometers, but 2:29:54 at 49 years old is a performance that needs no apology. The gap between first and second in M45-49 was just 52 seconds.

Aaron Kleinman, 46, of Boulder rounded out the podium in 2:32:38, delivering the 145th-fastest 30K-to-35K split in the field to surge through that middle stretch and separate himself from the chasing pack. Doron Clark (2:35:00) and Rick McCray (2:36:03) completed a top five that finished within seven minutes of each other — and all five men averaged under 6:00 per mile. In a field of 593 M45-49 finishers on a warm, humid Sacramento morning, that front group delivered something worth watching from start to finish.
