M55-59: John Hill Runs Away With It at CIM

• John Hill won the M55-59 age group in 2:51:46 (6:33/mi) — nearly 4 minutes clear of runner-up Aurelio Trujillo (2:55:37).
• The top five were separated by just 7:18, all finishing under 3:00 — a remarkably deep podium in a field of 328.
• Steve Rowbury produced the most dramatic second-half surge of the top finishers, climbing from well outside the top 1,000 men at the gun to finish 3rd in 2:57:34.
• Aurelio Trujillo ran the opposite arc — moving up sharply through 35K before fading over the final stretch, ultimately holding on for 2nd.

John Hill made this one look almost comfortable. The 56-year-old from Pleasant Hill ran a steady, controlled 6:33-per-mile pace from start to finish, and his position among the men's field tightened progressively across every checkpoint — from 879th at the first split all the way to 786th at the line. That kind of consistent forward movement over 26.2 miles tells the story of a runner who never panicked and never faded. In a field of 328 M55-59 finishers, nobody came close.

Trujillo made a genuine race of it through the middle miles. The 55-year-old from Riverside was charging hard — moving from 951st among men at 15K all the way up to 836th by 30K — but the wheels turned the other direction after that, and he was losing ground through the final 12K. He still crossed in 2:55:37, a very solid effort, but Hill had long since put the gap beyond reach.

The real mover of the morning was Steve Rowbury of Mill Valley. Starting deep in the men's field — 1,810th at the first checkpoint — Rowbury spent the entire race reeling people in. By the finish he had climbed all the way to 1,016th among men, and his 40K-to-finish split ranked 441st in the full field on that closing segment. Third place in 2:57:34 was the reward for one of the most patient, relentless runs of the day. Brian Baker (2:58:09) and Oleg Khryashchev (2:59:04) rounded out an under-3:00 top five that would be the envy of any age group at CIM.
