Napa Valley Half Marathon: Mattioli holds off a hard-charging Mercado to win F40-44

In 37°F morning air along the Napa Valley course, Amanda Mattioli ran a composed, wire-to-wire effort to claim the F40-44 title. Holding 29th among women through the first half and 29th at the finish, the 43-year-old from Reno never wavered — her 7:03/mi average was the class of the field and gave her a 32-second cushion over second place.

The most aggressive second half belonged to Miriam Mercado of Carmichael. The 40-year-old entered the 6.9-mile mark sitting 41st among women, then unleashed the 26th-fastest women's split on that closing stretch to surge all the way to 30th — a gain of 11 places in the women's field. It wasn't quite enough to catch Mattioli, but it was more than enough to lock up second in 1:32:58 at 7:06/mi. Kimberly Griger of Austin rounded out the podium in 1:33:20 (7:07/mi), running the 35th-fastest women's closing split to hold her position at 31st among women.

Fourth and fifth played out as a study in contrasts. Paula Siles (Santa Ana) was steady throughout, moving from 44th to 43rd among women to finish 4th in 1:35:24. Christine Gould (Novato) had been sitting 34th among women at the 6.9-mile mark but ran the 67th-fastest women's closing split — a notable fade — and slipped to 46th among women, finishing 5th in 1:36:38. Sarah Orozco (Scottsdale) came home just one second behind her in 6th at 1:36:39, with Stephanie-Jo Peterson (San Francisco) a further 11 seconds back in 7th at 1:36:50.

The depth across all 159 finishers was real: the top 20 alone spanned from Mattioli's 1:32:26 down to Megan Zellner's 1:44:36 — a range of just over 12 minutes across a competitive and hard-running F40-44 field on a cold Napa morning.
