Napa Valley Half Marathon: Alcalay rules the F65-69 field in the cold

• Laurel Hess edges Eileen Smith for the podium — 2:03:24 to 2:05:48, with Smith posting the stronger second half (341st-fastest women's split on the back half vs. Hess's 429th).
• A 22-strong field spread across more than an hour and a half of finishing time, from Alcalay's 2:01:22 to the back of the pack past 3:43.
• The second half told the real story: Smith climbed from 496th to 421st among women on the 6.9M→Finish segment, while Hess slipped from 348th to 374th — a genuine catch-up that made the gap between them feel smaller than it started.

Thirty-seven degrees and a damp Napa morning greeted 22 F65-69 runners at the start, and Allison Alcalay of Davis made it look like the conditions were made for her. Running a steady 9:15/mi, she moved from 419th to 339th among women in the second half — a surge through the field that underlined her command. By the finish line, the gap to second place was 2:02, a margin that was never seriously in doubt.

Laurel Hess of Lititz held second place at 2:03:24, but the story of the podium belonged to Eileen Smith of Napa. Smith ran the back half of the course faster than Hess — 341st-fastest women's split on the 6.9M-to-finish segment compared to Hess's 429th — climbing from 496th to 421st among women while Hess drifted back. Smith crossed in 2:05:48, and while the gap held, she was the one closing. Jane Hollingsworth of Moraga rounded out the top four in 2:12:21 at a 10:06/mi pace.

Behind the top four, the race opened into a tightly packed chase through the middle of the field. Sally Machacek (2:30:37), Assunta Branica (2:31:22), and Marie Nakagaki (2:31:37) finished within a single minute of each other for 5th through 7th — three women, three cities, one minute of racing separating them all. Carolyn Balling of Oakland claimed 8th in 2:36:41, and the field continued to spread from there, with Edna Lau (12th, 3:00:37) and Sharon Egelhoff (13th, 3:07:51) leading a determined back half of the field home.
