F1-17 Half Marathon: Kosla claims the crown in Napa

• Grace Kosla, 15, wins in 1:49:06 (8:19/mi), finishing more than two minutes clear of runner-up Lucinda Bittner (1:51:09, 8:29/mi).
• Fiona Chafen surges late: after running 8:55/mi pace across 13.1 miles, her final-segment split ranked 341st among all women — the strongest closing move in the F1-17 field.
• Aubrey Emerson and Kiran Porembski finish back-to-back: Emerson crosses in 2:22:44, Porembski one second later at 2:22:45 — different places, separated by a sliver.
• Z. Bert, 12, completes the course in 2:31:45 (11:35/mi), the youngest finisher in the field and ahead of older competitor Reese Bert (2:33:12).

Cool, breezy Napa conditions — 47°F and a 12 mph wind — greeted the 11 finishers in the F1-17 field on Sunday morning, and it was 15-year-old Grace Kosla of Orinda who handled them best. Kosla's 8:19/mi average was the class of the field, and her finishing push told the full story: her split on the 6.9M-to-finish segment ranked 231st among all women in the race — by far the sharpest closing effort among her peers. She moved steadily through the women's field as the race wore on, climbing from 320th among women at the first checkpoint to 257th by the finish.

Lucinda Bittner, 17, held second place in 1:51:09 (8:29/mi), though her trajectory was a touch more complicated — she slipped back slightly in the women's standings through the middle miles before recovering to finish 283rd among women. Fiona Chafen of Saint Helena made the race's most dramatic move in the back half, climbing from 470th among women at the first checkpoint all the way to 388th by the finish, good for third place in the F1-17 field at 1:56:49. Madison Jew (2:02:44) rounded out the top four, though her second-half split — 428th-fastest among women on the 3.1M–6.9M segment — reflected some fading in the middle stretch.

Behind them, Emerson and Porembski waged a race-long duel that ended with just one second between them. Aimee Lynn (2:53:33), Danielle Sagi (3:09:13), and Aadhya Gupta (4:04:47) each finished their own race across a wide spread of times, completing an 11-strong field that ranged from age 12 to 17 and Modesto to Cupertino.
