Under cool, breezy 47°F conditions along the Napa Valley course, Jack Moore ran a race that was never really in doubt. The 17-year-old from Napa opened with a gender place of 35th through the first checkpoint, briefly climbed to 34th at the midpoint, and then — as the race wore on — let the men's field wash past him while he held his 6:04/mi pace to the tape. That gap of 3:18 over second place tells the story cleanly: Moore was in a different gear.

Behind him, the battle for the podium was genuinely compelling. Giancarlo Cortes of Fairfield came through the middle stretch with the 72nd-fastest men's split on the 3.1M-to-6.9M leg, building a cushion over Thomas Duffy. But Duffy, also 17, answered on the final leg with the 73rd-fastest men's split — nearly matching Cortes stride for stride — and the gap between them at the line was just 31 seconds (1:22:55 to 1:23:26). Dooley, just 13 years old out of Visalia, crossed in 6th at 1:38:16 — a 7:30/mi effort that put real daylight between him and the 14-year-old Stuart Falace (7th, 1:51:58). And A. Yang, 12, from Sunnyvale covered the Napa Valley half in 2:28:50 — a genuine feat for someone that young on a 13.1-mile course in March wind.
