Napa Valley Half Marathon F40-44: Paten surges late to claim the crown

• Rebecca Paten, 1:22:30 (6:18/mi) — won the F40-44 race outright, climbing from 22nd to 15th among women on the final stretch with the 12th-fastest women's closing split (6.9M→Finish) in the field.
• Tight podium battle: Kendal Paul (2nd, 1:25:40) and Linden Rees (3rd, 1:25:56) finished just 16 seconds apart — but got there very differently, with Rees charging through the back half while Paul faded from 26th to 27th among women.
• Marisa Kellogg vs. Andrea Bayer: A 14-second gap separated 4th (1:27:47) from 5th (1:28:01), but Kellogg was climbing while Bayer was slipping — a clean role reversal over the final miles.

On a cool, breezy Napa morning — 47°F with a 12 mph wind — Rebecca Paten, 44, of Santa Cruz ran the kind of race that gets better as it goes. She entered the second half sitting 20th among women and left it 15th, closing in 6:18/mi average and posting the 12th-fastest women's split on the final 6.1-mile stretch. That finishing kick was the difference-maker, and it wasn't close at the top: she won F40-44 by three minutes and ten seconds.

The real drama played out behind her. Kendal Paul of North Vancouver held 2nd place throughout but ran a measured, slightly fading second half — drifting from 23rd to 27th among women — and finished in 1:25:40 at 6:32/mi. Linden Rees of San Francisco told the opposite story: she started 36th among women and reeled off the 22nd-fastest women's closing split to cross in 1:25:56, claiming 3rd in F40-44. Sixteen seconds is all that separated them, but Rees was the one making up ground.

Fourth and fifth place produced another compelling subplot. Marisa Kellogg (1:27:47, 6:42/mi) moved steadily through the field all race long, climbing from 52nd to 37th among women by the finish. Andrea Bayer (1:28:01, 6:43/mi) ran the opposite arc — strong through the middle, posting the 29th-fastest women's split on the 3.1M–6.9M segment, but ultimately sliding back to 38th among women. Kellogg's patient build earned her 4th; Bayer's fade cost her a spot on the podium.

Further back, Jaclyn Blumberg (6th, 1:30:49) and Vasantha Jotwani (7th, 1:32:29) led a deep pack, with all 20 listed finishers — from Santa Cruz to Girdwood, Alaska — breaking 1:40 on a day that demanded something extra from everyone who toed the line.
