Rocket City Marathon 5K — F55-59: Brooks Takes the Age Group, Hathaway and Chu in a Near-Dead Sprint for Second

Virginia Brooks came to Huntsville with something to prove across multiple distances. She'd already put together an 8th-place women's finish in the 10K, and then she stepped to the 5K start line and delivered the strongest performance in the F55-59 age group — winning in 29:14 at a 2:14/mi average. That kind of double-race commitment in one event weekend is a story all its own, and Brooks backed it up with results.

Behind her, the race for second was almost too close to call. Laurie Hathaway of Murfreesboro, TN and Uyen Chu of Lafayette, LA crossed the line separated by a mere four seconds — 29:28:55 to 29:28:59 — with Hathaway holding the edge by the slimmest of margins. Julie Nidiffer of Nashville rounded out the top four in 29:31:14, keeping the podium chase tight throughout.

Further back, the F55-59 field showed real depth. Phyllis Harris and Robin Giles — both from Alabama — ran nearly identical races, finishing 5th and 6th separated by just 48 seconds, with Harris clocking 29:36:01 and Giles 29:36:49. The warm, humid Huntsville morning (60°F and 85% humidity for December) made every second count, and 23 women in this age group showed up and got it done.
