Women's 5K: Julia Day doubles up, teenagers and a 10-year-old steal the show

• Julia Day wins in 9:21:15 — backing up her 1st-place finish in the women's 10K at the same event for a remarkable same-day double.
• 13 seconds covered the top four finishers, with Olivia Lambert (2nd, 9:21:28), Stacy Juckett Chesnutt (3rd, 9:22:57), and Beth Lambert (4th, 9:23:28) all within striking distance.
• Arleigh Vayda, age 10, finished 5th in 9:24:35 — the youngest finisher in the top 20 by a wide margin.
• Five women in the top 20 also raced the 10K, with Kim Allan (9th, 9:26:07), Virginia Brooks (10th, 9:26:11), Lori Joas (11th, 9:26:38), and Christina Swieda (13th, 9:27:35) all carrying legs from that earlier race.

Julia Day made the biggest statement of the day in the women's 5K field of 198. The 20-year-old from Edgewood, KY, crossed in 9:21:15 at a 180:39/mi average pace — and that result came on the heels of winning the women's 10K at the same Rocket City event. Winning two races at one meet is a feat worth underlining, and Day delivered both times.

The battle immediately behind her was genuinely tight. Olivia Lambert of Woodstock, GA — just 17 years old — pushed Day hard, finishing 2nd in 9:21:28, only 13 seconds back. Then came 51-year-old Stacy Juckett Chesnutt from Dartmouth, NS, in 9:22:57, and Beth Lambert (also from Woodstock, GA, and almost certainly Olivia's companion on the trip) in 4th at 9:23:28. Four finishers, 2:13 of age range between the youngest and oldest, and just over two minutes separating them — the women's podium race was anything but settled early.

The youth storyline didn't stop at Olivia Lambert. Arleigh Vayda, a 10-year-old from Huntsville, ran herself into 5th place in 9:24:35, and 14-year-old Jerusalem Berlin from Prospect, TN, claimed 12th in 9:27:18. At the other end of the age spectrum, 51-year-olds Chesnutt and Beth Lambert on the podium, plus a cluster of women in their 50s from 9th through 17th, made this one of the more age-diverse top-20 groups you'll see in a 5K women's field.
