M40-44 Half Marathon: Hudgins dominates on the hilly streets of San Francisco

Alex Hudgins ran away with the M40-44 title in commanding fashion. The San Francisco local averaged 5:47 per mile through the fog and hills, a pace that put him firmly among the faster men on the course regardless of age group. His split data tells an equally sharp story: he posted the 8th-fastest women's split on the 5M–10.9M segment — a stretch where many runners begin to feel the course — a marker of just how controlled and strong his middle miles were. No one in M40-44 came close to threatening him.

Behind Hudgins, the real drama was in the chase. Adam Boender (2nd, 1:28:24) was a climber in the truest sense — he entered the final stretch ranked 117th among women and clawed his way up to 55th by the finish, posting the 43rd-fastest women's split on the 10.9M-to-finish segment. Brandon Heiken (3rd, 1:29:43) made a similar late push, moving from 88th to 68th among women over the course of the race. Both men ran their best miles when it mattered most, and the 1:19 gap between them at the finish reflects a genuine catch-up effort by Boender that nearly, but not quite, closed the distance.

Further back, Jeff Wang (4th, 1:32:38) and Arturo Nevárez (5th, 1:33:43) each showed their best work earlier, with top-85 women's splits on the 2.95M–5M segment. The 1:05 gap between them at the finish held roughly steady through the second half. Marcel Bouma (6th, 1:37:01) and the Madrid-based Jose Maria Martinez Pastor (7th, 1:37:05) were separated by just four seconds — one of the tightest gaps anywhere in the M40-44 results — with Gennady Sheyner (8th, 1:37:51) just 46 seconds further back to round out a tight cluster in the mid-1:37s.
