SF Marathon 10K: De La Cruz dominates M45-49 with a sub-42 demolition

Jose De La Cruz didn't race the M45-49 field — he lapped it. The 45-year-old from Hayward crossed in 41:19 at a 6:39/mi clip, a margin so commanding that runner-up Warren Gasper's 46:27 finish — itself a solid effort at 7:29/mi — still left him more than five minutes back. That gap isn't a photo finish; it's a statement. On a cool, overcast San Francisco morning, De La Cruz was simply in a different race.

Behind Gasper, Peter Fichtel of San Mateo locked up 3rd in 47:44, giving the podium a clean shape: a dominant winner, a clear runner-up, and a third place with breathing room on both sides. The real drama started one spot lower, where Jeffrey Ng (4th, 48:57), Jeremy Joslin (5th, 49:05), and Damon Richardson (6th, 49:09) ran nearly in lockstep across the finish — 12 seconds covering all three of them. That's a battle worth savoring.

Nathan Crawshaw (7th, 50:46) and Steven Egli (8th, 50:57) rounded out the top eight within 11 seconds of each other, before the field began to spread out through the teens. Jarrod Wieland and Jason Rupp (19th and 20th, 54:59 and 55:00) essentially finished together to close out the listed field, with 58 more M45-49 runners completing the 6.2 miles behind them. A deep, competitive group — though on this particular Sunday, nobody came close to the man at the front.
