Masters Men 5K: Wingler dominates as a 55-year-old outpaces the 40-year-olds

Bill Wingler didn't just win the Masters Men 5K at the Cleveland Marathon — he made it look like a different race. The 55-year-old from Strongsville ran 6:45/mi to finish in 20:57, crossing nearly a full minute ahead of the next Masters Man and doing it in conditions that weren't exactly inviting: 67°F, 83% humidity, and a 15 mph wind off Lake Erie. That's a genuinely impressive performance in any weather, let alone this one.

Behind Wingler, the chase pack was a cluster of 40-year-olds. Ryan Green (Avon Lake) took 2nd in 21:45, running 7:00/mi, while Jeremy Long (Akron) was 3rd in 22:35 at 7:16/mi — a noticeably harder effort to cover the same ground. Christopher Bryant (North Olmsted) followed in 4th at 22:49, and Steven Johnson (Stow) rounded out the top six at 23:05. Five of the top six were 40, but none of them could touch the man a decade and a half older at the front.

The age story deepened further back. Jim Capron, 62, from Medina slotted in 5th overall at 22:58 — ahead of four 40-year-olds — running 7:24/mi in conditions that test anyone's legs. And at 12th, Randy Turk of Avon Lake became the race's most quietly remarkable subplot: 67 years old, 25:27, edging 44-year-old Jared Ingram (also 25:27) by the slimmest measurable margin. Twenty-three years between them, separated by a fraction of a second.

The top 20 wrapped up with Alan Trask (Wauwatosa) in 20th at 26:51, and 187 more Masters Men completed the course behind them — a deep, competitive field that made Wingler's wire-to-wire dominance all the more striking.
