Masters Women 5K: Matson dominates as Murphy edges Washington for the podium

Kathryn Matson of Seven Hills, OH, turned in a performance that was in a class of its own among the Masters Women. Her 20:56 finish at a 6:44/mi clip left the rest of the 313-woman field well behind — the gap to 2nd place was more than three minutes, a decisive margin in any 5K, let alone one run in 67°F heat with 83% humidity and a 15 mph wind off Lake Erie. On a day that made every second feel earned, Matson simply ran a different race than everyone else.

Behind her, the battle for the podium was razor-thin. Amy Washington of Cleveland crossed in 23:58, with Kristina Murphy of Bonney Lake, WA, right on her heels at 23:59 — one second the difference between 2nd and 3rd place after 3.1 miles of racing. Murphy ran the same 7:43/mi average pace as Washington, making this a genuine catch-up story: Washington held the edge at the line, but only barely.

The fight for 4th was its own subplot. Heather Westerman of Murrysville, PA, finished in 25:06 at age 53, making her the top finisher among Masters Women in their 50s. Leah Kilbane and Judy Gron, both 54 and both from Ohio, crossed in identical displayed times of 25:28 — 22 seconds back — with the official results separating them into 5th and 6th.

The field's most compelling individual story, though, may belong to Joan Pellegrin. The 71-year-old Clevelander crossed in 28:16 at 9:06/mi, finishing 12th and ahead of eight younger competitors in a Masters field that stretched 313 finishers deep.
